On Wednesday Evening, May 23rd at 7PM, Portland’s NAACP Honors the Legacy of Malcom X with reading excerpts taken from his books and and speeches. In the Po’Room, located at 8131 N. Denver Ave, local artists Mic Crenshaw, Eldon "T" Jones, Norman Sylvester, and more, will hold readings, share their own poetry and music to join the celebration.
The NAACP is honoring Malcolm X because the messages of the Civil Rights era is relevant now in our current political climate, as much as it has ever been. In the conclusion of Malcolm X’s autobiography he writes, “If I can die having brought any light, having exposed any meaningful truth that will help destroy the racist cancer that is malignant in the body of America – then, all of the credit is due to Allah. Only the mistakes have been mine.”
